The People’s National Movement (PNM) declared themselves the winner of Trinidad & Tobago’s 2020 election at around 10:30 pm last night (August 10th). The party won 22 seats while the United National Congress (UNC) won 19. The PNM lost only one seat from the 2015 election, Moruga/Tableland.
Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley also spoke of this term being a transitionary period stating, “This, ladies and gentlemen, could easily be my last term in politics in Trinidad and Tobago. I’m not one of those politicians who believe that when you come into office you out feet first.”
Political Leader of the UNC, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, did not concede defeat on the basis of filing for recounts in three marginal constituencies — St. Joseph, San Fernando West and La Horquetta/Talparo.
The PNM has declared that they will continue to pursue invalidating the nomination of UNC candidate for Princes Town, Barry Padarath.
The official release of the results is expected from the Elections and Boundaries Commision on Tuesday 11th August, 2020.
